Who is Catalyst Cymru - Heritage Fundraising for?

Catalyst Cymru - Heritage Fundraising is open to all staff, volunteers and trustees within the heritage sector in Wales including:

  • Historic environment
  • Landscape and natural heritage (historic gardens, wildlife, woodland)
  • Industrial, maritime and transport
  • Museums, libraries and archives
  • Intangible heritage (such as the preservation of memories, or oral history projects)

Cuts to heritage funding

In 2014 the amount of money Welsh Government has to spend on public services is 9.4%  lower in real terms than it was in 2010. The impact of these cuts are perhaps most keenly felt in the heritage sector where funding for museums, libraries and environmental organisations is currently very tight.

Evaluation

The Independent Evaluation of Catalyst, conducted by Wavehill, found that the project has been extremely successful:

Key findings from the Evaluation showed:

44%of organisations noted immediate sustained or increased income as a result of Catalyst training.

85%expected sustained or increased income from private sources in the next 12 months

As a result of Catalyst training…

74-90%of respondents reported greater knowledge

68-83%reported increased awareness

65-81%reported increased confidence

70-79%reported improved skills around fundraising from private sources

82%expect to further implement learning from training in future

83%will pass on what they've learnt

79-83% think the learning will further impact upon their everyday workWhether you're new to fundraising or just need some new ideas to freshen up your organisation's approach then WCVA's Catalyst Cymru-Heritage Fundraising project can offer you free help and support to develop your fundraising skills and success.

The evaluation concluded that Catalyst Cymru has met its key evaluation indicators and has made progress toward meeting its core and long-term objectives.
• Between 65-90% of surveyed individuals working and volunteering with heritage organisations have increased their awareness, knowledge, skills and confidence, and consequently their capacity to engage in fundraising activities by implementing the learning from Catalyst training.
• People working and volunteering in heritage organisations have more positive attitudes, and crucially are more confident with regard to raising funds from private sources.
• Steps have and are continuing to be taken by heritage organisations to embed the new knowledge across their organisations, and at multiple levels. Networking opportunities created by the project have allowed new relationships to be formed and specific, executive coaching has targeted and improved the skills and confidence of key personnel within organisations. Finally, the data suggests that many organisations and personnel are beginning or are in the process of changing their culture and expectations toward considering private sources of income.
• Moreover, the data suggests that the longer-term goals of the project are also being met, with more and successful fundraising campaigns securing income from private sources
• The data collected suggests that heritage is better managed, individuals have developed skills and consequently, organisations are more resilient in the changing and challenging fundraising environment.
